 Building Healthcare Collectives

The Building Healthcare Collectives (BHC) project emphasizes humanities expertise in care. We create an infrastructure where healthcare professionals, humanities researchers, community partners, and activists can work together to solve key problems facing the U.S. healthcare system. These problems include increasing costs, unequal access to care, unequal quality of care, and rapidly changing technological processes. Following the Literate Care model, we bring together interdisciplinary research teams focused on shared decision-making, preventative care, and a focus on health disparities due to social, economic, and environmental factors.

Project Description

Client/Project: The BHC project is funded by the Humanities Without Walls initiative and led by researchers from Michigan State University and The Ohio State University.

Team: Jacqueline Rhodes, Dawn Opel, Eric Rodriguez, Christa Teston, Margaret Price, John Jones, Liz Miller and Myself

My Role: Undergraduate Research Assistant, Social Media Strategist

Objective: As an Undergraduate Research Assistant, my goal at this point of our project was to uncover where the miscommunication was between the The Ohio State University team and the Michigan State University team. Our progression started to become stagnant and I took responsibility as a new addition to the research team to discover where the holes were and what we could do to move forward.

Timeline: October 2018

Problem

Almost 3 months into the project, there began to be communication difficulties between the The Ohio State University team and the Michigan State University team. My assignment up to this point was to uncover what each of the researchers wanted our public image to represent. I used this opportunity to not only find out what each researcher wanted our public image to look like, but I also uncovered where there we misunderstandings on what our goal as a project was.

Solution: Google Form

Visions of the Project

In this section of the Google Form, the goal of the questions were to see what people wanted Building Healthcare Collectives to be and if the whole team was on the same page or not.

The questions I chose did two things.

  1. Help summarize the messaging and branding we want for our public image

  2. Uncover where the misunderstanding stood between each member of the project team. This way we could take the information and take smarter next steps to improving the future of the project.

Social Media

To research teams, social media can be very new and difficult for them to understand. The modern way of learning about research being done around the world is done over social media. Stepping into my role as Social Media Strategist, I wanted to uncover what team members from both schools felt was the best way to use Twitter and Facebook to communicate our research and our interests. I hoped that they would give me an overall motivation for each of these social medias.

After finding out what each of the team members wanted the social media presence to look like, I needed to find out from the team how they believe the social media will be managed. It was said in passing that I was going to be responsible for this section of the project, but since it was never officially decided upon I wanted to find out if the team members:

  1. Wanted to take part in social media creation

  2. Had other ideas of who they wanted to do the social media creation

The final question was to find out if everyone understood how the public was going to contact the project team. There was an email put in place for the project team to check, but the process of checking the email and responding was not put into place. This question helped us to decide how this was going to work.
